Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON - The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake are showcasing more delectable wine and chocolate pairings than ever before during Days of Wine & Chocolate 2012. Each of the 28 member wineries will pair a premium VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) wine alongside a tempting chocolate pairing. “Days of Wine & Chocolate is the perfect excuse to whisk your honey away on a mid-winter romantic weekend, to get all the ladies together for some ‘girl time’ and everything in between,” remarks Stacey Mulholland, chair of the Days of Wine & Chocolate committee.

The Niagara Children’s Water Festival is a testament to the power of partnerships.  This initiative began in 2003 as a joint venture of the Conservation Authority, Niagara Region, City of St. Catharines and Ontario Power Generation.  Now in its 9th year, the festival continues to be a resounding success offering students an opportunity to learn about the importance of wise water-use and the protection and conservation of the environment within our local communities in a hands-on setting.

Each of the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake has been assigned a gourmet chocolate pairing and their winemakers tasked with finding the perfect wine pairing. Guests can expect their palates to be tantalized with both classic pairings and unexpected surprises. For a full listing of featured VQA wine and chocolate pairings, visit www.wineriesofniagaraonthelake.com.

Committed to working with local suppliers to create the finest chocolate pairings, the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake are working with Niagara-on-the-Lake pastry Chef Catherine O’Donnell of Willow Cakes & Pastries. O’Donnell is making over 50,000 chocolates during the month.

Sep 13, 2011: Niagara Region Transit - Launches September 2011

NIAGARA REGION, September 8, 2011 - Getting around Niagara is about to get a whole lot easier with the launch of Niagara Region Transit, the new inter-municipal transit service from Niagara Region. With Niagara Region Transit, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy convenient, affordable commuting through a large area of the region.

Working with the municipal transit operators of St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland, along with Port Colborne and Fort Erie, Niagara Region will begin Niagara Region Transit on September 12 with a full service launch planned for September 16. With this new transit service, residents will be able to pay just a single fare to start their trip in one municipality, and end their trip in another all for one fare with free transfers.

"Niagara Region Transit offers travelers a truly affordable option to get around Niagara," said Regional Chair Gary Burroughs. "With this new service, riders can ride from the north end of St. Catharines, all the way to Port Colborne or to Niagara Falls, with the convenience of one single fare."

For the introductory fare of just $5, passengers can board any municipal transit bus in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, Thorold, Port Colborne or Fort Erie then continue to transfer to Niagara Region Transit buses, and then onto another local municipal transit system without having to pay any additional fares.

The Niagara Region Transit buses stop at major destinations including the St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland transit terminals, Niagara Regional Headquarters, the Seaway Mall, and the Pen Centre.

In addition to the new Niagara Region Transit routes, the existing feeder service route from Fort Erie to Niagara Falls, provided by Niagara Falls Transit, and the Port Colborne to Welland route, provided by Welland Transit, will both be enhanced. The Fort Erie route will now operate year round and on Saturdays, while the Port Colborne route will now have additional daytime trips.

Niagara Region Transit is funded through a $3.7 million grant provided to the St. Catharines Transit Commission, Niagara Falls Transit and Welland Transit for the purchase of eight fully accessible buses that will be used on the Niagara Region Transit routes. In addition, Niagara Region will provide the estimated $2.7 million yearly operating costs for the system.

Prior to the full launch of the service on September 16, the three transit operators will begin to operate buses on the Niagara Region Transit routes starting on September 12. This early, pre-launch, activity will allow for any last minute route timing and adjustments and ramp-up prior to the full launch. Passenger service will be available during this evaluation time.
