The Wainfleet Wetlands is located in the Township of Wainfleet. This 182 hectare (450 acre) site was purchased in 1978 for the purpose of providing a habitat for fish and wildlife and protecting the area wetland and unique open rock history. This wetland is unique as it attracts a large variety of bird species. Over 50 different species of birds has been sighted at the Wainfleet Wetlands. Yellow warblers are the most common, and wading and shorebirds are plentiful. Some of the birds which you are likely to see include great blue herons, egrets, gulls, terns, and sandpipers.
Wainfleet Wetlands displays an interesting array of rock formations and coral fossils. These fossils are part of our natural history and are protected at the site, along with the wildlife and its habitat.
