The Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada is proud to announce the launch of Niagara’s newest wintertime attraction - the Rink at the Brink! The refrigerated rink will operate daily from November 1 to February 28, 2010. Visitors will soon be able to experience Niagara Falls from a new perspective – outdoor ice skating just steps away from one of the most-famous natural attractions in the world. With magnificent views of both the American and Horseshoe Falls, the Rink at the Brink will quickly become the quintessential Canadian wintertime experience!
Programming
The Rink at the Brink will offer paid admission recreational ice skating, skate and helmet rentals, as well as skating lessons for groups and individuals. It will also host special events, and in partnership with The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) will host on-site functions such as corporate holiday parties, birthday and engagement parties.
In 2010, we intend to enhance programming by adding events such as professional figure skating and hockey skills demonstrations as well as 3-on-3 hockey competitions.
Operating Dates & Hours
It will be open daily (10:00 am - 10:00 pm) from November 1, 2009 to February 28, 2010 for a total of 120 days of operation. After taking into account the time needed to clean the ice surface throughout the day, there would be ten (10) hours of daily operating time. Hours of operation may be extended on weekends and holidays if demand warrants it.
Description
Similar in size to the Rink at Rockefeller Plaza (New York City) and approximately two-thirds the size of an NHL hockey rink, the Rink at the Brink is portable and would be removed and stored after each season. The entire project includes:
- 60’ W x 120’ L ice surface with 42” H rinkboards installed around the entire ice surface
- Steel and canvas roof and wall structure (80’ W x 140’ L x 36’ H) with a clear view wall along its eastern side (facing the falls) that can be rolled up or removed altogether
- One (1) refrigeration unit
- Ice resurfacer (zamboni) and related equipment
- Public address/sound and lighting system
- Up to five (5) bleachers that can accommodate 200 people
Location
The Rink at the Brink will be located a stone’s throw from the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, perpendicularly northwest of the Table Rock Complex and approximately 300’ from the new crosswalk clock tower. This location provides magnificent sightlines for viewing both the American and Horseshoe Falls. Additionally, it is close to the retail amenities, Niagara’s Fury, and the food and beverage establishments (Pizza Pizza, Elements on the Falls Restaurant, Tim Hortons) within Table Rock, and abuts the large Fallsview parking lot. Lastly, it is near the incline railway, which once renovated in 2011, to operate year-round, will provide easy pedestrian access from the hotels and restaurants located within the Fallsview tourist area located directly above the rink.
