The Sun is Shining in Niagara!

May Long Weekend in Niagara

The May long weekend, or May two-four weekend as it is popularly known in Canada, is most importantly known as the Victoria Day Long Weekend. This holiday weekend is the official kick-off to the Canadian summer and there is no shortage of events throughout Niagara to ensure anyone can have a great time.

The Virgil Stampede is a cornerstone of the Victoria Day weekend celebrations in Niagara and features a plethora of all ages and family oriented events. The Stampede begins on Saturday, May 17 this year and kicks off with tournaments, pig races and live music. The Stampede is closed on Sunday, but resumes the festivities on Monday, May 19. Driving in Niagara

Driving in Niagara in May is a bit like the weather, you need to be prepared for a little bit of everything.

At some point during your visit here you will have had both the air-conditioning and the heat on in the same 24hr period. Rain in May can come on quickly so leave a safe distance. However, if you own a convertible or have a vehicle with a sun roof, bring it because you will want the opportunity to cruise with it open.

You may want to consider getting off the highway at Casablanca in Grimsby and stopping at the Gateway Niagara Visitors Centre. There you will be able to get discounted rates on attraction tickets, hotel rooms and loads of information and assistance from the helpful staff. From there you can take #8 Hwy right through to you destination. #8 has lots of shopping, wineries, and curvy, hilly roads through the countryside that make for a beautiful spring drive.

Niagara Weather

Weather in Niagara during May is usually quite mild as we head into the summer, however, we are surrounded by water and are exposed to the lake effects.

This means that it is quite common during May to be in shorts and a t-shirt during the day and bundled up in long pants and a coat in the evening as mother-nature tries to figure out which way she's going.

Rain is usually less of an issue than in April, but if you don't like the rain be sure to include at least an umbrella in your packing plans... just in case.
